Synopsis
Gary, who has just married Samantha, the woman of his dreams, discovers that her six-year-old son may be the Antichrist.
Review
The premise in this horror comedy is a good one - of that there is no doubt. But it doesn't pull it off quite as well as one would have liked. Adam Scott (Parks and Rec) plays Gary who has just married Evangeline Lilly's (Ant Man) Samantha. And immediately jarring within the first few minutes of the film, Gary has had little to no interaction with Samantha's son, nor has he spent time at her house. As I say - it jarred. The removal of suspension of disbelief so early in the run time (which isn't long at 94 min) was disappointing.
But anyway.
Gary turns his attention to Samantha's son, Lucas, in an attempt to find some common ground, and finds himself believing that Lucas is the Antichrist. Sadly, however, due to flashback/forward use, the surprises are removed at the beginning of the movie, spoiling any potential is he/isn't he. It's all a bit of a mish-mash to begin with.

The film plays heavily towards an Omen aesthetic, and has some very good points and some that are not so good. Firstly, being a Netflix Original, the budget is high - and well used. The effects are good, it's not over the top and the CGI works. But then the screenplay is a mess from the start. The cast is excellent - Adam Scott and Evangeline Lilly are great, the supporting cast (including personal favorite Donald Faison) are well done, and Owen Atlas is excellent as Damien knock off Lucas. But then there are few laughs. With Adam Scott front and center, especially after his recent role in Ghosted, belly laughs were expected, but he was largely wasted.
Consequently the film rolls more as a horror movie than a comedy. Which isn't bad, but a) it's not what I signed up for, and b) it has few surprises due to the writing, and well, just isn't scary.
I hoped for more, but it was little more than okay.
