Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.

Based on the novel written by Josh Malerman, adapted to screen by Eric Heisserer, Bird Box had me on the left foot when it first started. Knowing little about it - except that word had it, that it was awesome - it was ... just ... The Happening. Oh no. But it's not. Phew.Sandra Bullock pulls a superior performance out of the bag - her most stand out since Gravity (2013) in a tight, well written, well directed - can I call it a horror? - gripfest. Bullock leads the cast as a pregnant woman thrown into the world of an unseen evil, that when seen, causes suicide. Supported by Trevante Rhodes (The Predator), John Malkovich (RED), and Danielle Macdonald (Dumplin'), the fantastic slow burn writing leads the cast from one situation to another, with the film becoming more gripping the further it goes through.
While it has moments of horror - gore - death - suicide - the film revolves around little more than the behavior and relationships of the survivors. Forever dwindling in numbers.
It is both dark and slow, but equally exciting as time bounces back and forth from the present to the past and back. Time and again.
Absolutely a must watch for those that like the cerebral horror, and don't want the answers painted in big letters. Totally heart wrenching in places and award winning performances.
