Clearly a film with a message, #Horror was in the wrong hands when it was made. Without doubt it is writer / director / producer Tara Subkoff's passion project. Sadly it fails not only as a horror movie, but as a film. Loosely, six teenage girls all bully each other with social media, while together in a house in the middle of nowhere, until finally someone bumps them all off. Which, as a plot, is poor. I was expecting something more, a little, Unfriended, perhaps?None of the young stars particularly stand out as either good, or bad, but that may be the fault of first time director Subkoff. There are, weirdly, a host of relatively big names in it - mostly in cameos, and I assume as favors to the director - including Balthazar Getty, Timothy Hutton, Natasha Lyonne, and Chloë Sevigny.
The writing is bland, the direction (apart from the opening scene, strangely) without merit, and the acting uninspired. But far worse than that, there is some bonkers, loud (in both volume and gaudiness), vomit-inducing overlay that keeps attacking the viewer, as some sort of scene transition. It's supposed to be a representation of the Internet or something.
It's like waiting for a bus. You wait years, and then suddenly two one star reviews come along at once.
