Janice Gunter: Ghost Hunter Horror Movie Review

Janice Gunter, Ghost Hunter' is a comedic series following Janice, a self-described paranormal investigator, as she tries to get her ghost hunting business off the ground. Hijinks ensue, both real and other-wordly, as Janice encounters possessed mannequins, the underground drag scene, and even romance, all while being documented by her own mother ("Ma") on a home camcorder. 

Series created by and starring Elizabeth Zephyrine McDonough, an actress, writer, director, and comedian based in NYC. She has created viral comedy videos such as F the Internet and Maybe She’s Born With It, Maybe it’s… Something Else and has studied and performed improv and sketch comedy at The Groundlings, UCB, and The Magnet. Her videos and writing have been featured on The New Yorker, Slate, Vulture, The Verge, HuffPost, and broadcast on the Canal+ network, and have screened at festivals across the country. She has directed/produced for The Rundown with Robin Thede and The Reductress Hour, and recently directed a half hour man-on-the-street pilot for Comedy Central, executive produced by Jason Sudeikis. Janice Gunter is an original character she created many years ago, based on a woman who worked at her local CVS.

With guest appearances by Sunita Mani (G.L.O.W.), John Early (Search Party), Aparna Nancherla, Larisa Oleynik (The Secret World of Alex Mack, Mad Men), Cathy Curtin and Constance Shulman (Orange is the New Black).

Review

Janice Gunter hits the small screen, ghost hunting with a variety of stars, both established and not, with a variety of odd-ball characters. Sold as "comedic" this very much is - don't expect too much in the way of spooky goings on, or gory asides. And it's a pleasant surprise.

Star, Elizabeth Zephyrine McDonough (F the Internet) does a wonderful job of overly enthusiastic ghost hunter, Gunter. In fact all the cast are giving their all. It's a project with love written all over it. Played with a charming naivety, Gunter is a lovable kook, who gets into some bizarre situations, mostly because of her child like enthusiasm.

The show has a solid looking production - I'm assuming it was relatively low budget, but it doesn't look it. It's well polished, certainly, and fun little ride.

For those who are fans, think of it as a mellowed down Demonologist for Hire - only less Scottish.
