When the world is under attack from terrifying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound, 16-year old Ally Andrews, who lost her hearing at 13, and her family seek refuge in a remote haven.
Review
Director John R. Leonetti (Annabelle) creates an interesting film from an under-developed screenplay in The Silence. Creatures living within the Earth's catacombs are released, attracted by sound, and are very hungry by the time they meet the populous - leaving a city worker to flee the city with his family.Leonetti does a good job with the film. It's a ride, certainly, has a good pace for the majority of the run time, and the creature workshop have done a solid job in both design and creation. The cast is good, with Stanley Tucci (Transformers: The Last Knight) as lead. Tucci is without doubt an excellent actor and gives a decent performance here. The rest of the cast are good and include Kiernan Shipka (February), Miranda Otto (Annabelle: Creation), and Kate Trotter (Cold Deck).
Sadly the film falls with the screenplay. Based on the novel by Tim Lebbon, the film moves with such a ferocious pace that plot seems to have been discarded in favor of moving from point a to point b. There are a good number of omissions within the storytelling, meaning that anything other than a cursory viewing will lead to confusion.
That said it's a fun film to watch. It's a popcorn horror / sci fi. It's not particularly scary, while there is some death and gore it's pretty tame, and it doesn't require the brain to be switched on.
It's a great Sunday afternoon horror flick.
