A midnight showing of an early 1970's horror movie turns to chaos when the Killer from the movie comes out of the film to attack those in the theater.

Midnight Movie is an interesting little horror. It's a slasher film at its heart, but with a twist. The film begins in a psychiatric hospital with a film director being shown a film he wrote, directed, and starred in years earlier. Cue a massacre at the hospital, and the disappearance of director. Jump to the present day and a rundown theater is about to show the same movie - the first showing in forty years. You can guess where the director has been hiding this whole time.The setup is different, and explains away the single location nicely. The killer is a variation on the theme: The 'in-movie' plot lends itself towards the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but the 'real life' portion of the film is neatly done. Director Jack Messitt (debut) does a solid enough job, the effects team put together some nice effects, it's well edited. To be honest, it's pretty good. Those in front of the camera are pretty good across the board, particularly leads Rebekah Brandes (April Apocalypse) and Daniel Bonjour (iZombie) do well, and there is a stand out performance from Stan Ellsworth (The Do-Over).
The screenplay is a little repetitive at times, but the biggest problem with the film is the lack of budget. The presentation suffers by the in-film old film footage clearly being digital recordings with a filter over laid, instead of different cameras from that filming the actual film. Some of the effects shots are just not quiet there. It just missed excellent, and could have achieved it with ease with a few more bucks in the bank. Is it scary? Well, that's down to how scary you find slasher movies.
It's a decent little film and well worth the watch.
