MicroReview: The Ritual (2017)

The Ritual Horror Movie Review

A group of college friends reunite for a trip to the forest, but encounter a menacing presence in the woods that's stalking them.

Review

The Ritual Horror Movie ReviewDirector David Bruckner (V/H/S) makes solid work of Joe Barton's (iBoy) screenplay, based on the novel by Adam Nevill. The film starts well with some taut inner city shenanigans, before relocating to the wilderness. Four friends do as all good horror movie victims do, and go off the beaten path, wending their way into some horror.

Bruckner does well in weaving the isolation of the characters into the narrative, before forestry seclusion gives way to ritualistic terror and monsters in the dark. Although he mixes the pot well with some nifty psychological scares along the way, raising questions of dark magic and Blair witches,
before the big reveals.

The cast is led by the outstanding Rafe Spall (Prometheus), who, along with Arsher Ali (The Darkest Universe), Robert James-Collier (Downton Abbey), and Sam Troughton (Chernobyl), deliver spot on performances, to the backdrop of the foreboding forest.

Shot with style, and delivering on atmosphere, The Ritual is has plenty of slow build scares, drips with tension, and has decent rewatch value. A proper horror film for a Saturday night.
