MicroReview: Extraterrestrial (2014)

Extraterrestrial Horror Movie Review

A group of friends on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods find themselves terrorized by alien visitors.

Review

Extraterrestrial Horror Movie ReviewWritten and directed by The Vicious Brothers (who seems to be mostly Colin Minihan (What Keeps You Alive), and some of Stuart Ortiz (Grave Encounters), and btw, that name is not doing the integrity of the film any favors) Extraterrestrial is a far better film than expected. Low budget horror / sci fi can be a hard sell - most are character led, single location efforts - more about ideas than bug hunting aliens. This is quite the opposite.

Full of alien encounters, crashing saucers, and military cover-ups, Extraterrestrial lands a big screen punch on an indie budget. And damn good it is too. Being indie allows the makers to do whatever they want - and this is full of gore, goo, shotguns, and craziness. The FX are pretty spectacular, the direction is good. Minihan has some chops behind the camera, and the whole crew nail it.

Leading the cast are Brittany Allen (Jigsaw) and Freddie Stroma (The Harry Potter franchise) who hold the film up pretty well, and inject some humanization to the proceedings by pulling off a couple with a breaking down relationship - while in the throws of fighting alien invaders. The star-power is ramped by Michael Ironside (Starship Troopers) who is utterly fabulous here.

A well made, actiony, sci fi horror, it stands up better than Cowboys and Aliens, and Skyline, and is a fun Friday night flick. Pretty much must see for all those sci fi fans.
