To say this is likely to be a divisive film is an understatement. A ridiculously slow burn effort that crescendos fabulously, writers and directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer (both of Pet Sematary) have created something that you will either be utterly intrigued by, or turn off in the first 30 minutes.Alex Essoe (Doctor Sleep) plays Sarah, a desperate wanna-be actor, working in a faux Hooters, who signs up to a production company that is more than it portrays. Yes, it is slow. Yes her 'friends' are annoying people. But the film is what it wants to be. It's well written and well directed. It is a bizarre horror film, trust me.
As the effects of the production company come to a head the film treads more into body horror - and extreme it is, in places - in a very Cronenburg fashion. The build up is tense. The climax is both shocking and strange. The FX are extremely good throughout, making the squick on screen something quite horrible.
There is some pretty solid acting on display, too. Essoe is good in the lead, carrying the film admirably, and some of the supporting cast are great. Louis Dezseran (Broken Gardenias) as The Producer is maniacal, and there's a good performance to be found from Noah Segan (Dead Girl). As I say, it is a slow film - but worth sticking with - and certainly something a little different from the normal slasher's that are on every corner at the moment. Stomach churning in places, and an interesting premise.
