MicroReview: Proud Mary (2018)

Mary is a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life is completely turned around when she meets a young boy whose path she crosses when a professional hit goes bad.

Review

Director Babak Najafi (London Has Fallen) turns in a solid action flick, with Taraji P. Henson (Smokin' Aces) starrer Proud Mary. Mary is a hit woman, sure, but has worked her way up the family, being held in high esteem by patriarch, Benny, having ended a relationship with his son, Tom. When the proverbial hits the fan, Mary has to choose her allegiances, all guns blazing.

Henson was a great choice for the titular role - she's relatable enough to hold the viewer, but has the action chops to pull off the (excellent) gun play scenes. With a supporting cast including Danny Glover (Bad Ass 2), Billy Brown (Sons of Anarchy), and an excellent turn from Jahi Di'Allo Winston (Feed the Beast), there is enough talent on screen to make it an easy watch.

The film skates the line of drama and action well, Najafi proving he is a tremendous cross genre director - and the action scenes are some of the best around.

Proud Mary received some negative feedback on release (much the same as the excellent Polar) - probably because many people expected it to fall into the John Wick clone category. Perhaps the fault of the marketing - I wouldn't speculate - but Proud Mary is an excellent flick for lovers of all stylish action.

Must see stuff.
