All hail the creators. Seriously. If this film didn't look so polished I would say that this was created by a few indies looking to make their perfect movie. It's a film that I don't want to spoil, so I will only touch on what is in the synopsis from IMDB, above. It's a modern take on the eighties slasher, it has all the nodding, nudging, knowing, that you could want. Basically, what if you, a horror fan from 2020 was in the original Nightmare on Elm Street? The first Friday? If you were there the night He came home?Writers M.A. Fortin (Queen of the South) and Joshua John Miller (Queen of the South) are obviously massive fans of the slasher genre. They've put in sly winks to every trope and lore going. And if you're a fan of the genre looking for some tongue-in-cheek throwback, the film has you covered. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) the film making feels very Edgar Wright. It would definitely serve well in a movie marathon with Shaun of the Dead, and The Babysitter.
The cast play out perfectly - with trope characters galore, from the shy girl, the stoner, jock... it Cabin in the woods's all over your comedy. Star and figurehead Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story) does a great job in the role. She carries the weight of the film with relative ease and has broad emotional range to boot. Impressive for such little experience at the time. The supporting cast are also great from Malin Akerman (Watchmen) to Angela Trimbur (XX). Spot on stuff.
As I say - it's very reminiscent of Shaun, both in style and delivery. It's wickedly funny, and a decent horror/slasher too - rocking on all accounts. It does beg for a sequel, but alas, time has passed and there doesn't appear to anything on the horizon.
But sit and watch. This is glorious must-see film making.
